A Feature-length bluegrass documentary
Coming 2027

More Than A Contest

or a trophy

Winfield is a feature-length documentary directed by Marcel Ardans, of Lessons With Marcel, and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, Robert Gourley, about mastery and the cost of dedicating your life to a tradition.

Set in the world of competitive flatpicking, the film follows three guitarists in the months leading up to the 2026 National Flat Pick Guitar Championship in Winfield, Kansas: the most prestigious bluegrass guitar competition in the world. For over 50 years, the contests at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival have been a proving ground in bluegrass music, a place where your talents are measured in a matter of minutes.

But Winfield is not a film about a contest. It is a film about the people who give their lives to something difficult, beautiful and often overlooked by the outside world. It is about what drives someone to spend decades chasing mastery. This film is for anyone who has ever devoted themselves to something uncertain in the hope that it might mean something. This story is not about who wins but what it costs to keep trying.

Why we’re making Winfield

In the niche world of bluegrass, the contest players are a group who have transformed acoustic guitar playing into something resembling a professional sport.

Their earnest devotion to excellence in pursuit of a prize guitar and bragging rights is beautiful. There is no cash prize or press tour for winning the National Championship. For many competitors, the authenticated claim to having inched the artform forward is enough.

But that is not the whole truth. Every contestant arrives with a different reason for competing and a different kind of satisfaction they hope to find. In exploring those motivations, we found a group longing to repair something broken, prove something meaningful, or leave behind something permanent inside an art form they love.

This is the foundation of Winfield, a film following musicians chasing recognition and reconciliation through one of the most respected stages in acoustic music.
